A placid smirk was placed on the face of Linda Godfrey as she sat at the bar in the Moonlight Lounge. An apple martini was in front of her, halfway gone. Well, that could be described for Linda too. She wasn't drunk, no. She just felt good. It didn't help that the world was spinning just a little and the songs played on the dance floor were now beginning to beckon her on. She rarely did this. But tonight was a night for celebration. Linda had just gotten a call from a high-class reporter in London who wanted to print one of her articles. This could be her big break; her big dreams beginning to come true. So, she came to the Yacht Club for a few celebratory drinks. She'd planned on coming with William, but he had some work to take care of. She understood and was well used to it. They were both successful people. That was probably what brought them together.
Linda's slender hand brought her martini to her lips as she sipped idly, barely able to taste the alcohol anymore. Maybe it was time to call it quits, she didn't want to get too drunk and have to call William to pick her up. She'd just be a big ol' burden. "Freshen up your drink, love?" a bright eyed bartender looked at her, smiling vaguely as he glanced to her drink. Well, one more wouldn't hurt too much would it? The reporter nodded to the man, finishing off the rest of the other drink and sliding it over. "You know, I should be stopping sometime, but tonight's just a night to celebrate," she said, carelessly waving her hand around. It really didn't matter much. Another drink wouldn't do her in.
The bartender handed over the drink and Linda tossed over the money, giving the man a little extra. "Keep the change... for your trouble." It was things like this that made her feel just a little younger than she actually was. Like the old her that used to believe getting printed in the paper was the biggest and best thing to ever happen to anyone. Linda was sentimental like that. Grinning, she turned around to face the room again, wondering if just dancing to one song would hurt.

How embarrassing. Rose Clarke had been stood up. Not that she had been particularly enthusiastic about the date in the first place. It had merely been one of those ‘may as well’ sort of dates. He had asked, she had been free. Plus, it kept others from commenting on her lack of a relationship if she could say she went on a date. Why were people so nosy about other people’s love lives anyway? It wasn’t like there wasn’t more important things to be worrying about. Of course, she was only against all the questions because she had no answers. If she had good answers, she might even coax people into asking her.
This evening of course, was not going to be one story she’d tell with pride. She knew perhaps her daughter may be able to pry it out of her, but that would be it. No one else would bare witness to Rose Clarke’s tragic tale. Frowning slightly, Rose looked up from her drink. Oh…fudge muffin. There, across the room was the absolute last person Rose wanted to see. Linda Godfrey. The woman who would not only delight in seeing Rose desperate and dateless, but would probably delight in telling everyone. Some ugly bit of luck she was having, wasn’t it?
Rose looked back down into her cosmopolitan. Perhaps Linda hadn’t seen her? If she didn’t make eye contact, or look at her then perhaps it would be okay. Swirling her drink a little, Rose brought it up to her lips and took a sip. How many now had she had? Too many. She knew that much. What else were you supposed to do while waiting for a date? Besides order more drinks? Actually, what was Linda doing, all by herself drinking? Glancing up again, Rose took in Linda once more. Was it at all possible that both females were being stood up?
Oh now that was a happy thought. Linda being stood up by Mr Heaton. Wouldn’t that wipe away some of her ego? Now, the actual chances of that weren’t exactly that high, but the thought was amusing. In fact, the whole night was almost worth it. Just for that one moment of joy. Chuckling, Rose shook her head. Her mind really was an odd place actually…

Yikes. What was she thinking anyway? Her, dancing? There was definitely a lack of people on the floor, and the fact that she would look like a complete moron. Linda shook her head at herself, giggling just a little bit. Perhaps if there was a dutiful suitor at the bar, this wouldn't be too much trouble. Dancing with a man for just one dance wouldn't damage her relationship with William, and it certainly wouldn't damage the little buzz she had going on. So, she turned to the bar, scanning the faces that blearily looked to the bar, to the floor, or to their drinks.
Oh no, it couldn't be. Linda couldn't help but let a smirk cross her features as she saw Rose sitting at the bar. Was there a man to be seen around her? No. This made Linda's grin grow wider as she took another drink. Cheers to that. She'd known for the longest time that Rose had been after William just about as viciously as Linda herself had been. But in the end, who had been the true victor? Oh yes, that's right. Bring on another round of drinks, bartender, this was definitely a night for celebrating.
Well, she didn't want to gloat now did she? After all, when she'd asked William if he'd come out, he'd cautiously denied her. Linda hadn't thought much about it until now, but she hadn't seen him in... damn, three days. They'd both been busy, sure, but drinking alone certainly wasn't the way to go when one was celebrating a possible big business opportunity. Perhaps, as a sort of... 'white flag' surrender, Linda would walk over to Rose and try to bury their past quarrels and they could share a drink or two in honor of Linda's success.
Was that a little self-centered? Well, she didn't seem to think so at the moment. Giving a bleary look to the rest of her drink before downing it, Linda got off her bar stool. Damn, it was a little bit farther to the ground then she'd thought. Blinking a little as she gained her composure, she walked over to the other female with just a trace of a smirk on her lips. "Fancy seeing you here, Rose," she said, not trying to sound bitchy, but somehow it just came out that way.

Why was it that everything that woman said sounded insulting? Oh. That’s right. Because it normally was. Hearing Linda’s voice caused Rose to shudder inwardly. So much for slipping by Linda’s attention un-noticed. Of course that would be far too much to ask for. The gods in control of her life were at this moment having a romping good time, seeing just how much embarrassment they could heap upon her until she snapped. Which actually might be very soon. Depending on exactly how this little encounter with Linda goes. All she could do was prey to the heavens (in the hopes that one god up there took pity) that someone would call and give her a reason for a quick exit. Perhaps Ruth in a crisis of clothes or something.
Pulling a hopefully realistic grin to her features, Rose looked up from her drink. Unlike the other female, Rose was rather good at hiding her bitchy tone of voice. She was skilled at saying nasty things and masking them perfectly as polite comments. “Linda! What a delight.” The woman glanced over the other woman’s shoulder, as if looking for someone. “Oh.” She frowned. “No William tonight? What a shame my dear.” She offered a sympathetic smile. “Men and their busy schedules.. It must be sad when he can’t make time to have a drink with his girlfriend.”
Rose didn’t like that word. Girlfriend. It sounded so high school. What else could she use though? There really weren’t any decent adult sounding words for that sort of thing. Lover sounded as if it was a clandestine relationship and partner sounded as if they were gay or something. Hmm. Maybe there was something in that? She could make a fortune for coining a new term..

She usually didn't want to sound like a bitch. No, really, she didn't. It just tended to come out that way. Linda was sure of herself, and maybe that came off as cocky or bitchy. But again, she really didn't intend it to. The reaction she got from other people when she spoke to them was usually that of which she just received from Rose; a little shudder, and a mix of emotions between pissed off and submissive. People thought she didn't notice. Well, she did. Linda just didn't care.
The woman couldn't help but smirk a little; she'd seen through positive greetings backed by reproachfulness many times, but decided to throw Rose a bone. Grinning happily, she nodded, looking behind her shoulder. "No, he's got some other matters to attend to tonight," she said, looking back to Rose. "Not that I mind or anything, we've both had our share of success over the past couple weeks." Okay, so that sounded bitchy too. But Linda really couldn't help it. It was hard to mask something when she was already slightly drunk.
The word 'girlfriend' took her back a bit. Did everyone really think that they were dating? Well, they were, but word just seemed to get around so fast. And everyone knew that Rose had a thing for him for a while, but Linda just seemed to step into the picture too quickly for the other female to take action. Oh well, finders keepers. "Speaking of," she said, looking over Rose's shoulder. "Have you found a new man?"

Rose Clarke did not want to hear about whatever success Linda seemed to be dying to gloat about. It would be oh too much for her delicate soul to take. Alright, not so much her ‘delicate soul’ but more so the fact that her desire to hit the other woman would go so great she wouldn’t be able to deny it. It was an impulse she found she had a lot when she was in the other female’s presence. Which was, mind you, one of the very few times she ever felt like hitting someone. Unless maybe someone hurt her kid.
“A regular power couple then right?” She shrugged dismissively. Bringing her drink up to take a long sip. She didn’t want the conversation to linger to long on the topic of Linda’s success, in case the other woman got the stupid idea that it was okay to share her newest success. Rose was thrilled she had brought up a new topic, though the actual topic left a lot to be desired. No, she had not found a new man, she also wasn’t sure that she even wanted to. Not just yet anyway..
However, could she let Linda know that? By All means, no. Pulling a sweet smile to her features, Rose nodded. “Yes, actually I have. It’s a new relationship and I don’t want to jinx it, so I can’t say too much.” Her eyes flashed a little, as she took another sip of her drink. “He is rather a looker though, Let me just say.” Oh, she knew lying was a silly idea, but poor Ms Clarke needed to save some face, didn’t she?
