INNOCENT. Being a daddy’s girl and a home-body, Gwenivere never went though the rebellious stage of life where one often becomes aware of the less cookie-cutter aspects of life; she knows little of danger or thrill or desire. She has always kept herself out of any type of trouble and because of this, she has never seen the dark side of life—she always saw the best in her friends and was rarely wrapped up in the drama of high school. It's not that she's stuck up; she truly loves her friends, and would do anything for them. But they understood that fights or any sort of risks made her terribly nervous, so they didn't push her. She’s been saving herself for marriage, and poor Gwen rarely ever understands and conversation, joke, or reference to sex. They just go right over her head. Everyone in her life has always sheltered her, and this hasn’t bothered her a majority of the time.
CARETAKER. Gwen has always had instincts to help and care for others. Sick? She’s probably making you soup and rubbing your back. Overworked? She’s probably trying to think of ways to help you out. Unhappy? She’ll do anything to bring a smile to your face. Gwen knows no limits when it comes to helping others, and in this way she often over extends herself in an effort to support everyone around her. When she was in high school, and her friends would throw parties, or get wasted, she was always the one who helped clean things up or held their hair while they puked. The young woman can’t distinguish loved ones from strangers; her desire to lend a hand is equal to everyone. This often allows for the young girl to get used by people who know how to play to her emotions—no one is really sure if she simply doesn’t see this or purposefully turns a blind eye to it. Either way, she helps them as well.
COMPLIER. From infancy, Gwen has been the type of person who wants to live up to other’s expectations of her. She has always done what is expected and wanted of her, and never batted an eyelash at it. Her parents always demanded good grades and mindfulness from the girl, and Gwen always supplied it. She did well in school because it pleased her teachers, she did chores at home because it pleased her parents, and she spent unusually long amounts of time with her younger sister because it made her happy. It wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy these things. She did. But the reason she enjoyed them was that it brought joy to others.
LIKES. kind hearts, listening, sleeping in, reading, fresh flowers, feeling included, milkshakes, daydreams, romantic comedies, keeping hope alive, pancakes (and other breakfast staples, but mostly pancakes), making people happy, beautiful weather
DISLIKES. mean-spirited actions, hopelessness, failing, scary/depressing movies, being talked down to, chocolate, arguments, feeling useless, being alone (especially at night), perverted behavior of any kind, exerciseTHE WHY
BEST MEMORY. She had been standing in the kitchen, washing dishes like she always did after dinner, and humming to herself as she did. Her parents were upstairs, and she couldn’t hear them in the slightest over her own voice and the running water. She had been seven years old. She remembered finishing the dishes just as her parents came down the stairs and as she turned off the water she could feel them standing behind her, seemingly motionless. Worried that something was wrong, the young girl turned to face her parents; the brilliant smiles on their faces promised only good news from them. At the time, she didn’t sense the slight tension and worry swirling around the room. A large smile on her face, Gwen’s mother announced, “I’m having a baby Rosie, darling. You are going to have a little brother or sister.” Gwen cannot remember ever feeling more elated.
WORST MEMORY. The air was thick with worry in the waiting room, and the excitement that Gwen had been feeling only moments before had been quickly extinguished as her father came bursting though the door, a pained and anxious look on his face. He had been ushered out of the delivery room because his wife’s life was in danger—she had begun hemorrhaging and was loosing blood fast. Within minutes, she was gone. A time that should have been joyous and exciting turned out to be grim and mournful. The baby was healthy, but young Gwen could not wrap her head around the fact that her mother was in gone and was never coming back.
Mister and Misses Young lived an uncomplicated life. They loved each other simply and completely, and nothing had ever come between them. Both coming from wealthy homes they were provided with exemplary educations and attended the same university, which is where they met. She was a foreign exchange student from France, and he loved every single thing about her. They were together though most of school, and got married shortly afterwards. So caught up in their love of each other, and their flourishing careers, the couple waited quite a while before they decided that they were ready to have a child. Mrs. Young was 35 when she had Gwenivere.
They’d always had high expectations of their daughter. She was to do well in school and be well behaved at all times. They never had disciplinary problems with Gwen; she was an angel child, never throwing tantrums or being disagreeable. It was almost eerie, how well behaved she was and they occasionally wondered if she was developing properly emotionally. She didn’t react normally to things like toys being taken away or other children starting fights with her at school. She never defended herself in social situations, which made her an easy target for bullying. Fortunately, she also had a tight circle of loving friends who defended her from the worst of things.
Things went smoothly for the Young family, until it was learned that they were having another child, completely on accident. By this point, Mrs. Young was already 45, making the pregnancy high risk. Furthermore, she was diabetic. Determined to go through with the pregnancy, Mrs. Young gave birth to her baby 2 months early—the baby was only 3.5lbs, but survived. Mrs. Young did not, and left behind a devastated husband and daughter. Mr. Young carried on as best he could, but was never the same. Gwen in turn picked up even more responsibility around the house, learning to cook and clean and watch after the baby very quickly. She wanted to hate her little sister for taking away her mother, but one look at that sad tiny motherless baby, and Gwen felt the strong urge to care for her in every way possible.
Gwen continued to do well in school and she probably could have gone to a top rate university, but opted to attend one near home and commute so that she could continue to take care of her sister and rapidly aging father. Almost all of her friends left for school, which hurt but she understood. The worst of this time was long term boyfriend leaving, only shortly after she found out that he had been cheating on her and lying to her their entire relationship. Delighting in the act of caring for others, Gwen found comfort and joy in taking a job at the day care center in town and throwing herself into that helped her get over the abandonment that she felt. She probably could have done better with her life in other people’s eyes, but that would have compromised her ability to be a constant comfort to her family. Now, she is mostly concerned about starting a family of her own to nurture and love, as has always been her dream.THE HOW

FROM A GEEK LIKE ME
It seemed odd to Gwen that anyone could become parents. Any two people could get pregnant and decide to keep their children, and raise them in practically any way they like. It seemed to Gwen that parenthood was one of the most challenging and important roles in society. It was one of those things for which you should have a certain amount of schooling, and interviews, and screenings, and internships before you can prove that you are capable of handling the job. Gwen knew nothing about small children—she had taken care of her little brother, but that wasn’t until she was old enough herself—she didn’t even remember him before the age of 2, and she certainly wasn’t allowed to watch him then. It wasn’t until he was about five that she began to care for him, and even that was minimal. Sure she was reading parenting books, and talking to her parents, but was that really enough? Jason was a good parent, and his parenting seemed based on following his instincts and doing the best he could. It was clear that the twins were happy. Looking down at Riley, it was impossible to ignore the grin tugging at the sides of her mouth. As he was lifted onto the couch, she brought her face down level to his. ”Hello there. I’m Gwen.” She continued to look at and play with Riley, nodding her head. ”I know. I can’t thank you guys enough for being so supportive and all the help you’ve offered. I don’t know how I would do this without you two behind me. I only wish there were anything I could do to pay you back.”
Frowning, Gwen looked up at Jason, concern and compassion in her eyes. She worried about him so much sometimes. ”Jason, I’m sorry you’re having such a hard time. Is it because of your illness? I wish I could help…I’m not exactly a therapist. I know you are seeing on though… hopefully things will turn around for you soon.” She leaned over and rested a hand briefly on his arm as she told him, ”If there’s anything I can do, just let me know. Even if it’s just company. You should never have to feel all alone.” She leaned back, watching him for a reaction. She hoped that he would take her offer seriously; she wanted to help him as much as she could. Gwen couldn’t really think of any way she could be useful to him or Bree, but she had to offer after all they had been willing to help her. As his request to watch Maddy and Riley, Gwen’s heart race picked up just a bit. She looked almost suspiciously at the twins, half expecting them to jump off of the couch at the first opportunity. She leaned forward just a bit and tensed herself, preparing to leap up at any suggestion of them falling. She also took the opportunity to watch the children’s mannerisms. It was easy to see how a parent could love these two—they were all smiles, and they were absolutely beautiful children. That would make sense, seeing as they had attractive parents. She called over to Jason in the kitchen, ”Does it get exhausting, having them all the time? I know you don’t like to be apart from them, but surely it can get frustrating.” Gwen was the type of person who really appreciated her alone time, so she knew that it was going to be strange having this little person around her all the time. Certainly one must want to just lay in silence knowing no one was in the house every once in a while.
As soon as he came back with the food, Gwen picked up the glass of eggnog and took a big gulp. It was perfect, ”Jason this is great! I can’t believe you’ve never made it before.” She began to unwrap her sandwich, eager to start eating. It was exactly what she had told Jason she liked—an Italian BMT. Biting in, she looked down at the twins as she chewed. ”Do you usually feed the twins at a different time than you eat? It must be hard, having to take care of both of them at once all the time.” At his comment, she looked up at him quickly, feeling a pang in her chest. The young woman had totally forgotten that Jason and Bree were trying to have a baby, and had been struggling to. A heavy, illogical guilt lay on her shoulders—her she was accidentally having a baby from one single time of having sex, when two people who were in love and deserved a baby had been trying for months now. How was it that life worked out that way? It was messed up, really. And unfair to both parties. She sighed heavily, ”I’m so sorry Jay… I completely forgot that you guys were trying! Here I am walking around complaining about how hard this is, when all you guys really want is a baby. How selfish of me.” She put a hand over her mouth, feeling herself tear up a little. She took a deep breath before continuing, which helped a little, ”If only it could have been the other way around… With Bree pregnant instead of me.
