THE WHAT
CHATTY. Ozzy is talkative to the nth degree. When it comes to conversation he has no inhibitions; he’ll approach everyone and anyone. Perhaps it's because he likes to hear himself talk, perhaps it’s because people just interest him in general, but regardless of his motives, there’s no denying that the guy is personable. He has an ease with which he speaks that makes him appear agreeable and easy to get to know. He’s certainly a people person, which is definitely an asset when it comes to his job as a bartender. Not only does he mix a mean cocktail, but he gets mad tips for his invigorating conversation yo’. I suppose the same goes for his day job; his open personality and agreeable demenor make him equipped to deal with kids exceedingly well.
VIVACIOUS. When you’re with Ozzy, something nothing short of amazing is always around the corner. He’s one of those people that always seem to attract the absurd or the deliciously fun. His enthusiasm for life is infectious and regardless of what sort of mood you’re in, you’re bound to always have a good time with him. Within his group of friends, he’s definitely the glue that keeps them together. He spends so much of his time ensuring that everyone is getting along fine and dandy so that when they’re all together, they’re enjoying themselves to the fullest. He’s the dynamic one of the group and the one that’s always ensuring there’s a healthy amount of amusement going around. He’ll be the one dancing on tables, the one challenging others to ridicules drinking contests, and the one singing the loudest to all the songs on the speakers. While his shameless happy-go-lucky attitude is what is so attractive about him, it’s also one of his faults. Because he’s so out there and focused on having a good time, people often get the impression he’s incapable of being serious or dealing with grave situations soberly.
ECLECTIC. Ozzy's got a unique sense of style. He's got the swagger of a thug, the excitability of a 6 year old, the zest of a drag queen, and the tranquility of a peaceable stoner. He's a lot of things bundled into one and it's evident in his personality, his habits, his interests, and even the way he dresses. The diverseness in his sense of self can easily be attributed to his mixed background. Cultural influences from his Navajo Indian father and Rwandan mother have worked their way into his sense of style, not to mention the fact that he’s been heavily influenced by Anglo-American culture. I guess you could just call him a big melting pot.
LIKES. Tortoises, slam poetry, puns, movies that take place over the course of one night, anything that remotely resembles snakeskin, Ratatat, glam rock, Sandra Bullock movies, street performers, movie music, the theme to Day's of Thunder, dorky glasses, his mom's singing voice, his fathers ineptitude at telling stories, Pocahontas, spiders, planetariums, Lady GaGa.
DISLIKES. Silverfish, moths, butterflies, hospitals, the word "flesh", Kevin Costner, Gone with the Wind, anything that has to do with vampires, radio announcer banter, people taking advantage of him, when people only respond to him on msn with "aw" or "lol", crows, being caught in the middle.
THE WHY
BEST MEMORY. His father taking him to the San Diego Zoo when he was 9. He can’t remember a moment filled with more bliss than when he got to see the giant tortoises.
WORST MEMORY. You’d think that his worst memory would come from the period of time spent in Rwanda, but in truth, Ozzy doesn’t remember much from his early childhood. Perhaps it was because he consciously blocked its horrors from his mind, or because he was too young to really understand the severity of the situation in his country. Anyways, the worst memory he has is actually from high school. Ozzy essentially got one of his best friends expelled. The friend, who was developing a serious drug habit, on occasion left his stash in Ozzy’s locker because his parents had discovered his secret hideaway in his bedroom and now had no place to safely keep it. For a while Ozzy was tolerant of this, but soon it became too risky for him. Ozzy confronted his friend and told him that he couldn’t store them for him any longer, however his friend disregarded the request and kept at it anyway. After an incident where the answer key to the upcoming exams had gone missing, the principal decided to conduct a locker search throughout the school to see if it had been a student that had taken it. You can guess what happened next. Ozzy got pulled into the principal’s office and was lectured on the severity of the school’s drug policy. In order to clear his name, Ozzy had to tell the principal that it was his friend’s drugs that they’d found in the locker and not his. Though he felt betrayed that his friend had continued to harbor drugs in the locker even after being expressly told not to, he couldn’t help but feel incredibly guilty for ratting his friend out.
There was no doubt about it; Asher Thorpe was madly in love with Fadiya Bikindi. Asher, a Native American photographer for National Geographic, first met his future wife in her home of Kigali Rwanda. He was on assignment conducting a photographic piece about Rwandan culture and how it was being effected by the distinct separation of the Hutu and the Tutsi. Fadiya, a local woman, soon became the center focus for almost all of his photographs, and through the lens of his camera, a love developed. Though tentative at first about the idea of loving a foreigner who could easily be whisked away to another corner of the world by his work, Fadiya decided that it was in her best interest to marry him. Why not? She cared for him and there was the distinct possibility that by marrying him she’d be able to see the world. So they married and shortly there after had Oswald Tse Bikindi; their first and only son.
Not wanting to uproot herself from her home just yet, Fadiya made the firm decision to raise Ozzy in Kigali where she would be surrounded and supported by her family. The idea was fine at first; Asher would live a good portion of the year with Fadiya, and when he left for work, she wasn’t left alone to raise the boy by herself. As far back as Ozzy can remember he’d been surrounded by family. If his mother wasn’t watching him then it was Grandfather, and if not his grandfather, then it was his second cousin, and if not his cousin, then his aunt. He had a large network of people looking after him. However that changed drastically when Ozzy was 6 years old, around the time of the Rwandan genocide.
Hostilities broke out and it seemed as if everyone, regardless of what their background was, was being slaughtered. Much of his family became casualties in the bloodbath, but luckily for Fadiya and her boy (as well as her sister and father), they were able to escape the brunt of the violence through their connection with Asher. They relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico and restarted their life there. Ozzy’s childhood was good despite its rather bloody beginning, and much of his time was spent with his father exploring the great expanses of desert with a camera. After a couple years, Asher quit working for National Geographic and instead took up another photojournalistic job based in the UK. And so the family was uprooted once again and planted in another foreign country in a little town by the name of Lampton Hill.
Ozzy’s adolescence in Lampton Hill was perhaps one of the best times of his life. He had a large network of friends in high school and found his niche in baseball and poetry. After graduating from high school Ozzy attended a year at the University of London only to find out that it wasn’t for him. Much to the dismay of his parents, Ozzy decided to drop out and instead started working in his hometown as a bartender at the local pub. As of now he’s completely contented with his life in the small town and has become quite a fixture in society.
